Nomaco created the U.S. market for and remains the leading supplier of polyolefin mechanical pipe insulation for the residential plumbing professional and DIY market segments. The company’s success in this category is the result of introducing cost-effective, easy-to-install products that efficiently reduce energy consumption.
Nomaco’s advances in protective foam padding for indoor and outdoor play equipment led to new industry standards for children’s play areas. The flexibility and closed-cell properties of polyethylene foam made it the perfect solution to protect children at play. However, damage caused by weather and birds led Nomaco to create Tuff PadTM technology, which provided a resilient, integrally bonded outer layer for the foam and opened the door to subsequent development of the company’s most successful innovation.
The cushioning and resiliency characteristics of synthetic foam make it a logical choice for protective packaging. Using technological expertise in 3D design and in-line fabrication, Nomaco became the first manufacturer of extruded polyethylene foam packaging profiles, eliminating the need for labor intensive secondary conversion and fabrication required with other types of packaging materials. Nomaco foam packaging has been used to protect a wide range of products including electronics, appliances, furniture, automotive parts, glass, fixtures, trees and many others.
In the early 1990’s, one of Nomaco’s distributors took some pieces of foam used in the construction industry home for his children to play with in the pool. They loved it so much that he suggested Nomaco design a product specifically for this purpose. After some re-engineering, a construction foam material was transformed into the pool noodle which became a mass market success, achieving sales in excess of 15 million units per year.
Guided by Gert Noel’s long-held belief that synthetic foam could be used to create a better wine cork, Nomaco technologists developed a synthetic foam wine closure which allows winemakers to create better wine more consistently. This synthetic closure was so innovative that it launched a new company, Nomacorc, in 1999 and forever changed the face of an industry. Today, Nomacorc has become the second-largest-selling brand of wine closure in the world, ultimately changing the way winemakers think about making wine.
In 1992, Nomaco began supplying extruded polyethylene foam components to the bedding industry. The company’s continuing innovations in products and technologies ultimately enabled US bedding manufacturers to efficiently assemble single-sided mattresses, creating an industry transformation that allowed consumers to sleep better.
